I just saw a special about HEARING on PBS--evidently babies hear music in utero and have already learned our diatonic scale and its usual motifs (or "licks") before birth. Many cry at intervals of thirds! Cultural musical norms are so pervasive that any other scales or intervals from any other culture strike us as alien and "wrong". Thank God for Stravisnsky and his "Rite of Spring". It awakened us to dissonance and nonresolution, freeing us from cliche forever.
